Wednesday, March 21 was the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, a day that recognizes both the deaths of 69 peaceful protesters at the hands of police in South Africa in 1960, as well as the ongoing problem of racial discrimination in the world today. In acknowledgement of this day, the St. Thomas-Elgin Local Immigration Partnership held a workshop for area high school students from St. Josephs Catholic School, Parkside and Central Collegiate Institutes, along with both the East and West Elgin Secondary Schools. The workshop, which ran from 10:00am-2:00pm at the St. Thomas Seniors’ Recreation Centre, featured programming on such topics as Unconscious Bias, Media Literacy and Fake News, and Identity.

Participating students and accompanying teachers stand for a photo at the end of the workshop.
