The rights, liberties and opportunities that come with Canadian citizenship can be easily forgotten or taken for granted, especially by people born into them.

But a community celebration in St. Thomas this week aims to highlight those benefits and reflect on Canadian values in an event for newcomers and long-time residents alike.

“It’s a great time for all Canadians to basically, not only reaffirm our commitment as being Canadians,” said Selvin Mejia, coordinator of settlement services for St. Thomas and Elgin.

“And also the opportunity to everyone else (who) lives here in St. Thomas and the County of Elgin, to celebrate the fact that they live here.”

The event is part of Citizenship Week, which is celebrated the third week of October each year.

All in the community are invited to gather at the YWCA in St. Thomas to say a community pledge, affirm a citizenship oath and welcome a few of the community’s newest Canadians.
